Employment History, Experience and Responsibilities

Jan 2013 - Professor, Geotechnical and Geo-infrastructure engineering

Currently Head of the Monash Geomechanics Group, which has 5 full-time academic members, 26 PhD students, 7 Research Fellows and 1 technician. This is the largest Geomechanics Group in Victoria and one of the largest in Australia. Worked as Head of the Geomechancis Group from September 2004 to February 2005 and 2009 to date, and Director of Research from Jan 2005 to July 2006 and Deputy Head of Department in 2008. Held various other administrative positions and represented Faculty Council in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Worked as 3rd and 4th Year Course advisor, and publication collection and quantum travel fund distribution officer. On some occasions, acted as Head of the Department over short durations.

The Chief Investigator of Critical Water Pipe Project, A collaborative research project among 6 Australian water utilities and 2 International water bodies. Total cash funds over 5 year duration is $ 4 million and in-kind contribution about $12 million.

Units taught included Foundation Engineering elective (4th year), Introduction to Geoengineering (2nd year), and Geoengineering (3rd year). Fully developed a new component (1/3) of Road Engineering (6 credit points, 3rd year) on the topic of pavement engineering. Currently supervise and co-supervise 10 PhD students.

Activities undertaken include: development of new subjects and restructure of courses; development of research projects in collaboration with industry and government bodies; management of research grants and supervision of research projects; and involvement in professional activities. Research areas include: clay liner and cover technology; groundwater and contaminant transport modelling; pavement and ground stabilisation; geosynthetics applications; unsaturated and reactive soil behaviour and foundation performance; landfill design and contaminated land assessments; piled foundations; rock joints and geotechnical interface behaviour and numerical modelling of geoengineering problems.

1991 to 1994 - Senior Geotechnical Engineer, Golder Associates Pty. Ltd., Melbourne, Australia

Responsible for management of projects, and theoretical and numerical analysis of geotechnical and geo-environmental problems. Typical problems handled included: site investigations and in situ testing, slope stability; seepage and groundwater flow; soil consolidation; pavement analysis and design; buried pipe and culvert analysis and design; foundation stability and settlement; analysis and design of retaining walls and piled foundations; geosynthetic applications; and landfill analysis and design.

Development and maintenance of computer programs for various geotechnical/geoenvironmental problems.

1989 to 1991 - ARC Research Fellow, Dept. of Civil Engineering, The University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia

Finite element analysis of soil-structure interaction problems. Emphasis was placed on the analysis of buried flexible tubes and culverts under large deformations up to and beyond buckling. Development of theoretical aspects and the computer programs for the above analyses. Part-time lecturing and conducting lab classes for undergraduate students in Geotechnical Engineering.

1985 to 1989 - PhD Research Scholar, Part-Time Tutor/Research Assistant, Dept. of Civil Engineering, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia

Research on the shear behaviour of rock-concrete joints and side resistance of piles in weak rock. This project included experimentation of rock-concrete joints in a specially designed large direct shear machine under various stress paths, modification of the above machine to perform specific tasks, development of a computer model for the simulation of the rock-concrete joint behaviour and the rock-socketed pile performance, conducting parametric studies and development of a design methodology for piles socketed into Melbourne mudstone. Also performed tutoring in Structural Mechanics, Soil Mechanics and Engineering Mathematics.

Lecturing in Rock Mechanics and Hydraulics Engineering. Conducting lab and design classes in Geotechnical and Water Engineering.

1984 - Civil Engineer, Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau, Sri Lanka

Employed as a site engineer in a team of German and Sri Lankan engineering consultants in the construction of a 93 m high rockfill dam with a central earth core. Supervision of dam construction including dam instrumentation.

Computer Software Development and Involvement (1985 onwards)

  • JOINTR - An irregular triangular joint model for the simulation of shearing of a rock-concrete joint, Monash University.
  • AFENA - AFENA (A Finite Element Algorithm) is developed by Sydney University (Professor J. Carter). I added the nonlinear structural elements for buried tube modelling and a new interaction analysis utilising sub-structure techniques for large deformations and arc-length control solution methods for solving problems featuring bifurcating or turning load paths, Newcastle, University.
  • BOREFLO - To plot fence diagram of borehole data and air-lifted flow rates with depth using Lahey Fortran and Hgraph plotting routines, Golder Associates.
  • WCAP - A user friendly water chemistry analysis and plotting using Lahey Fortran, Spindrift Windows and Hgraph plotting routines, Golder Associates.
  • FPIG - A user friendly menu-driven front end program for DEFPIG pile analysis program (Professor Harry Poulos, Sydney University) using Lahey Fortran and Spindrift Windows library, Golder Associates.
  • GGWP - The development and enhancement of certain sections of Golder groundwater finite element program (GGWP). These included the development of a bandwidth minimiser to reduce computer time substantially for large problems. Implementation of non-linear optimisation schemes to provide an automatic error analysis feature to assist large model calibration, Golder Associates.
  • GWEDGEM - This is a state-of-the-art slope stability program using generalised wedge method developed by Professor I.B. Donald and the late Dr Peter Giam. at Monash University. I made certain improvements and developed a simple graphical interface for this program, Golder Associates.
  • SETTLE - A user-friendly menu-driven program for stress and settlement analysis due to general loading conditions including rectangular and circular loading areas. The program features deterministic and probabilistic computation of elastic, consolidation and creep settlements. Developed using Lahey Fortran and Interactor graphics software, Golder Associates.
  • Several custom programs for unsaturated flow modelling, flux boundary modelling and contaminant leachate modelling and clay cracking.
