Ready to Apply for Honours in Economics?

Domestic students:

  1. Email Choon Wang at liang.c.wang@monash.edu to get the application form

  2. Prepare a 1-2 page research statement that indicates "Why you'd like to do Honours" (e.g., areas of research interest, draft topic/proposal if you have one)
  3. If you are a non-Monash student, include certified copies of your non-Monash transcripts. If you are a Monash student, we will gather your current transcript from the university database.
  4. Mail the application package to: Honours Course Administrator, Student Services Office, Monash Business School, Monash University, Clayton VIC 3800.

International students:

  1. Prepare a 1-2 page research statement that indicates "Why you'd like to do Honours" (e.g., areas of research interest, draft topic/proposal if you have one)
  2. Apply through the IRS here:

NOTE:

  1. Applications are to either the BUSEco Faculty office, or the IRS (if you are an international student). Please don't submit them to the Economics Honours Coordinator (he will just have to forward them to the faculty).

Scholarships

Check this link for information on all relevant Honours scholarships:

The Department of Economics offers several scholarships ($5,000 to $15,000 for one student, for one year) to the best ranked entrants to the incoming Economics Honours year. There is no need to apply, in effect, every student who applies to Honours is automatically eligible for the scholarship.

Other Scholarships

Other scholarships are available through the Monash-wide Jubilee Honours scholarship program, or for Econometrics students, there is a scholarship available.

Applications FAQ

Do I need to re-enrol now? No. You can't re-enrol yet since you do not have a place in the Honours Program. You will undertake enrolment and unit-selection in consultation with the Honours Coordinator once you have been accepted into the program (see below).

When will I be notified?

I've been studying at another Australian institution, what should I do? That's fine -- as the pic shows, just apply as a 'local' (not international) student, but notice that you'll need to supply certified copies of your academic transcripts with your app form.

I can't make it to campus to hand in my forms, what should I do? Just pop it in the post! (addresses are listed in the pic)

How important is it to have figured out a research topic area? It is not essential that you have all of the details of your research topic worked out before applying for honours. The fact is that many students find that by the time that session starts in early March, their interests have changed, or the supervisor that they thought would be around is on study leave (it can happen!). In which case, we're more interested in you indicating your general research area of interest -- this helps us with the first round of matching students to supervisors. Note, nothing is set in stone -- you will be able to move supervisors (and projects) in the early part of the year (with good reasons, of course). Other tips for your 'research statement' are to mention what interests you about the general area, a few articles or books that you would cite as influencing this interest, and perhaps even a prospective supervisor that you have in mind and why.

Is there anything else I should mention in my 'Research Interests' letter? If you have a non-standard entry (e.g. non-Monash, or not from Monash Clayton, or ...) then it will help if you write down how the units you've taken (and marks you've received) fulfill the equivalence of the standard Economics Honours admission criteria.
