-ari

Word Class: NAdj

absent, missing , nonexistent

Other information:

Notes: Occurs only in predicative forms and as cpd. finals. Exx. as predicative NAdj: 13.15.2, 15.9.7, 28.10.7, 76.2.2. Ana form waa= ri also used as basic negative preverb not in past and present tense (except potential), and as general one-word negative answer no . Probably related to ari (above). Inch: =ari-ma- to become absent. 139.2.4. Fact: =ari-wa- or =arl-ya- to cause to be absent, to make (something) disappear. Caus: =ari-jga- (attested in cpd., see below, with -lhu[-). Rdp. form -araa- rl (often heard as -arari- without long vowel): 49.1.4ff. (cf. discussion of nigararij). Inch. of rdp. form: -araa= ri-ma-. 97.8.1(punctual aspect). (Rdp. form seems to be simply an intensive, rather than a Pl or aspectual marker.) As cpd. final may have usual meaning <absent, nonexistent>, but with stems implying praise for skills ( good hunter , etc.) it is used to reverse the meaning ( bad hunter ). For the latter usage see w2alaj, perhaps ma`ajgari.
