Amish Life: The Amish at Work
Some of the Amish men work as carpenters on a construction crew for large contractors, as the Amish people are well known for their fine wood craftsmanship. Usually the Amish men hire a driver with a full size van to take them and their tools to and from the worksite each day. Others have their own crew of carpenters and work as independent contractors. The Amish ladies are usually homemakers, but there are a few that work away from the home. Several Amish families have their own businesses. For example in our area there is a family that builds kerosene cook stoves that are used by the Amish people. Another family runs a blacksmith shop that was passed down from their father many years ago. Another family runs a green house where you can get your vegetable plants and flowers in the spring. And yet another family runs a bakery where you can buy all kinds of baked goods, such as breads, ! pies, donuts, etc. I know one family that owns a dry goods store and another that owns a grocery store. Until recently nearly all Amish families also farmed 80 to 100 acres in addition to being carpenters or business owners. Due to the limited availability of farm land in the area, most families now purchase 30 to 40 acres to live on. This gives them enough ground to build a house and barn, have 2 or 3 horses, a few cows, a few chickens, and a large garden.

Recipe of the Month: Sweet Potato Casserole
  • 3 cups cooked and mased Sweet Potatoes
  • ½ cup Butter
  • 2 Eggs, beaten
  • ½ cup Sugar
  • 1 tsp. Vanilla
  • Topping:
  • ½ cup Flour
  • 1/3 cup Butter
  • 2/3 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 cup Pecans, chopped
Mix first 5 ingredients together and put in buttered baking dish.  Combine the remaining ingredients and sprinkle on top.  Sprinkle ½ cup pecans on top of entire mixture.  Bake covered at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until golden brown.  This is a wonderful addition to your Thanksgiving dinner.  Yield: 1 – 9 x 13 pan.
