• Assessment of assimilation techniques

• Importance of increased observation depth

• Effect of satellite repeat time

• Computational efficiency - moisture model/assimilation

• Collection of an appropriate data set for algorithm evaluation

• Proving the usefulness of near-surface soil moisture data
