Addhost -- Network Host Database

addhost in the generic name given to the suite of programs that maintain the Monash University Host Database.

Local Network Administrators can be authorized to add/modify/remove network registrations for machines under their control.

Multiple people can be editing different database records. Extensive input validation checks are performed, and duplicate registrations of key fields are prevented. If desired, the next free IP address within a range can be requested.

A example addhost registration is:

Addhost Components

There are several programs in the addhost suite: badhost, brmhost and dumphost can be driven by scripts. In fact, dumphost is used by the addhost query programs listhost, addhostq and addhostr.

If you have a particular query you want to run periodically, it is not to hard to write another dumphost script to do it.

Subdomain Administration Policy

Each subdomain should have a primary Subdomain Administrator. This is usually the person who requested the subdomain (using this form), or their job function successor.

If another person also wishes to have administration rights for a particular subdomain, the request needs to be approved by the primary Subdomain Administrator for that subdomain.

If there is no primary Subdomain Administrator (either because no-one initially volunteered for the role, or because this is a "generic" subdomain), then a request for administration rights for the subdomain needs to be approved by the Monash Domain Administrator (currently John Mann).

Becoming a Subdomain Administrator

Addhost training is periodically provided by the Computer Centre Customer Services group.

Subdomain Administrators need to have an account on the "addhost" database machine, currently old-mother.

The Subdomain Administrator's usercode and their addministration rights needs to be registered in the "addhosers" file, and their Email address added to the "addhosers-l" mailing list.
