Monash Webmasters

... A university Webmaster will be formally appointed, who will initially report to the Office of the Special Adviser [Communications & Multimedia] and with whom all webmasters will liaise. The University Webmaster will carry overall responsibility for administering policy, the primary WWW servers currently located in the Computer Centre and their support software.

• Setting up URLs for groups using www.monash.edu.au;

• Developing and maintaining the top-level Monash pages;

• Advising on web-page development, naming conventions, file conversions, and how to access/maintain pages on the central server;

• Liaising with the Computer Centre about servers, server maintenance, additional services, testing new services;

• Liaising with departments about web services generally and about problems with particular pages;

• Answering an amazing variety of Mail addressed to me as webmaster.

...all organisational groups including faculties and major centres with a presence on the WWW will be asked to identify webmasters who will be responsible for:

• ensuring that the WWW pages originating within their group meet the requirements of various copyright and communication acts, and the publication guidelines promulgated from time to time by the University.
• liaising with the University Webmaster, faculty registrars and records administrators to ensure that appropriate authorisations and records are maintained.

The group will support the webmaster role and provide services such as:

• Searchable index to Monash web pages, to individual groups' pages and to other areas such as electronic journals or databases.

• Generic services such as commonly-used cgis, fill-out form support, templates for some pages.

• Advice and training for webmasters.

Standards

• Not meant to regulate the overall design or content of pages

• Distinction between official and personal pages

• Consistency in use of logos, disclaimers, backlinks

• Signoff for official pages
