Research Interests

Prof Soria is interested in the physics and control of turbulent flows. He uses both physical experiments and direct numerical simulation to investigate fluid physics. His current research interests include: transitional and turbulent wake flows, attached and separated boundary layer flows, swirling flows, hybrid rocket fluid and combustion physics and the development of non-intrusive optical experimental measurement methods.

He has developed several Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) systems, including complete customised CCD/laser experimental computer control systems and full menu driven Auto-correlation and Cross-correlation PIV analysis software. The later includes a novel adaptive sampling window algorithm which results in increased dynamic measurement range and reduced sampling window sizes. These systems have been used in several studies of unsteady flow phenomena and have in some cases provided the first measurements of velocity/vorticity fields. For example the adaptive Cross-correlation PIV technique has provided some of the first temporal vorticity field evolution measurements in separated flows from a blunt flat plate.

Prof Soria currently leads research programs: (i) to develop highly accurate instantaneous non-intrusive fully 3-D volumetric velocimetry measurement methods based on Holographic Particle Image Velocimetry (HPIV), (ii) to investigate the topology of separated turbulent wall bounded shear flows, (iii) in direct numerical simulations of homogeneous, isotropic turbulence with scalar transport, transitional and turbulent free shear flows and wall bounded shear flows with scalar transport, (iv) to investigate vortex ring flows and turbulent zero-net-mass flux jets and (v) to investigate the flow and combustion physics of hybrid rocket motors.
