Comm. 35 Dainis Dravins (dainis@astro.lu.se) Pres. Div. IV John E. Dyson (jed@ast.leeds.ac.uk) Pres. Div. VI A Proposal for a 1-day Joint Discussion on: Pre-Solar Grains as Astrophysical Tools This is jointly supported by Commission 35 "Stellar Constitution", Commission 34 "Interstellar Matter", and Commission 22 "Meteors, Meteorites & Interplanetary Dust ". The JD will be formally proposed by Division IV "Stars" and Division VI "Interstellar Matter". The proposal results from extensive discussions among the members of the Working Group on Abundances in Red Giants, a WG of Division IV. Motivation ---------- The identification and recovery of pre-solar grains in meteorites has caused a revolution in stellar structure and nucleosynthesis calculations. Yet the extent of this revolution is still not as large as it could be. It is time for the broader stellar community to see the constraints that these dat aprovide, and a JD seems to be an excellent way to bring together the communities working on stellar spectra, stellar interiors, meteorites, and the interstellar medium. SOC --- Anja Andersen (Denmark) (Co-Chair) David Arnett (USA) Martin Asplund (Australia) Suchitra Balachandran (USA) John Bradley (USA) Mounib El Eid (Lebanon) Roberto Gallino (Italy) Sunetra Giridhar (India) John Lattanzio (Australia) (Co-Chair) Jacco van Loon (UK) Nami MOwlavi (Switzerland) Takashi Yoshida (Japan) Ernst Zinner (USA) Topics ------ We intend the meeting will take place over one full day, in four sessions, arranged as follows: Session 1: Introduction and Overview Coffee Session 2: Forming Grains Lunch Session 3: Measuring Grains Coffee Session 4: Pre-Solar grains and nucleosynthesis Invited Talks ------------- we currently plan on having Invited talks of 20 -25 mins, to allow for some contributed talks. Details will be decided when we have the list of requested contributions. Listed below are the Invited Talk topics and suggested speakers. We have tried to strike a balance between youth and experience, country and gender, with a minimum of speakers from the SOC! Session 1 Overview: Opportunities from Grains Grain Measurements in Space and in the Lab Abundances in Grains, Stars and the Galaxy Session 2 Condensation of Grains Mass-loss: the role of Grains Life Story of a Grain: Formation to the Lab Session 3 Recent results on IR Grain Spectroscopy Nano-SIMS RIMS Session 4 Pre-solar grains and novae Pre-solar grains and supernovae Pre-solar grains and AGB stars Overview: Agenda for the Future We hope you will view this proposal favourably John Lattanzio and Anja Andersen (on behalf of the SOC)
