Workshop roundup

Photo0074 The workshop went off without a hitch today with 14 attendees including locals (from Monash and elsewhere in Melbourne), and our visitors from Canada, USA and the Netherlands. From the organiser's point of view it was a terrific success with very interesting talks leading to much vigorous discussion. The workshop wound up around 6pm, and the workshop dinner at the palatial Notting Hill Hotel rounded out a very enjoyable day.

Below is the preliminary program. Talks are intended to be up to 30 min, leaving plenty of time for questions and discussion.

Confirmation of date

Since the week beginning 30th July will host the NIC school, I propose a date for the mini-workshop to be

** Friday 27th July **

Please let me know if there are any other clashes or issues with this date.

First announcement

Thermonuclear Burst Workshop
Monash University, Clayton Campus

Since there will be a number of people in town this July with research interests involving thermonuclear bursts, Yuri (Levin) suggested that we should have a mini-workshop on the general topic of burst physics, sometime in the 2 weeks before the NIC meeting, i.e.:

23rd July — 3rd August.

Given the participant numbers, I expect a fairly relaxed schedule over 1-day at most, and allowing plenty of time for free discussion.

Could you please reply and

  1. indicate any days during this period that you are NOT available.
  2. let me know if you would be willing to give an informal talk on your research, and if so what might the topic be.

It might be preferable to schedule the meeting as close as possible to NIC, as it can then be advertised to others coming to Australia for that meeting, who might then be able to attend the workshop. ON the other hand, having the meeting earlier will serve better as an introduction and hopefully lead to productive discussions. I welcome your opinion either way!

Feel free to forward this on to any other potential participants.

* Note that the week of 23rd July is also the beginning of teaching Semester 2 at Monash.
