Dr Dengsheng Zhang received  his PhD in Computing from Monash University in 2002, Australia. He has also completed the Graduate Certificate of Higher Education and the PhD supervision accreditation certificate in Monash University. He joined Monash University after he completed his PhD in 2002. He is currently a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University, Australia.

Dr Zhang has over 17 years research experience in multimedia information processing and retrieval areas, and has published over 60 refereed international journal and conference papers in his career. The number of citations on his publications is over 2,600 based on Google Scholar. His h-index is 23 (23 of his papers have been cited at least 23 times) and his g-index is 51 (51 of his most cited papers have at least 51 citations each on average). He has jointly received $250,000 funding from an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Grant to support his research on music classification. He has supervised 5 PhDs and two masters to completion, and is currently supervising and supervising or co-supervising 4 PhD students on color, shape, texture, audio retrieval and higher level image retrieval. His main research interests include pattern recognition, computer supported cooperative work on Internet (CSCW), multimedia information processing and retrieval. He has won the 2009 Faculty of Information Technology Early Career Researcher Award for his outstanding research achievement.

Dr Zhang has been a visiting scholar/scientist to a number of prestigious institutions including the State Key Lab of Pattern Recognition of Chinese Academy of Sciences; Institute of Radio Engineering and Automation of South China University of Technology; School of Computing & Mathematics (now School of Engineering and Information Technology) of Deakin University, Australia. Dr Zhang is a member of IEEE computer society and serves in the reviewer boards of over 10 international journals including IEEE Transactions journals: PAMI, TOM, TIP, CSVT; ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communications, and Applications (TOMCCAP); and Pattern Recognition journal. He has also served in the program committees and organization committees of 14 international conferences. Currently, he is the associate editor of WSEAS (The World Scientific and Engineering Academy and Society) Transactions on Signal Processing.

Dr Zhang also has over 20 years teaching experience and has taught extensively in mathematics, science English, database, computer networks, multimedia development, eCommerce, computer systems, business systems, operations management and management science.
