Title: Event Detection in Wireless Sensor Networks Using a Decentralised Pattern Matching Algorithm

Abstract: A pattern matching algorithm for performing event detection within large-scale wireless sensor networks is presented. The algorithm is based on distributed cooperative problem solving concepts. Sensory measurements from the physical environment are rendered as sensory patterns. The pattern storage and pattern matching

operations are performed in an entirely decentralised manner within the sensor network. A committee of sensor nodes cooperatively negotiates to match sensory patterns with stored patterns. The algorithm also incorporates a sleeping mode for improving performance and prolonging the lifetime of the sensor network.

Key words: Wireless sensor networks, distributed detection, distributed artificial intelligence, parallelism, pattern recognition.

Keywords: Pattern recognition, in-network computations, associative memory, wireless-sensor-networks (WSN).

Title: Multi-level Pattern Recognition in Wireless Sensor Networks for Structural Health Monitoring

Abstract: Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are emerging as a significant platform for the deployment of applications to monitor the health of structures. Sensor nodes constituting a typical WSN are responsible for sensing their environments and conveying their readings to a centralized base station for further processing. A significant amount of overhead may be incurred owing to large-scale data transfers between sensors and the base station. It is therefore imperative to reduce the volume of data generated by in-network processing mechanisms. We propose the design of a multi-level decision fusion mechanism on a WSN for recognition of patterns depicting the health of structures. Initial pattern analyses are performed within the WSN through a concurrent pattern recognition algorithm designed for tiny devices. The second layer of the pattern recognition process is done at the base station of the sensor network using adaptive mesh refinement and local data interpolation over triangulated surfaces. In-network processing provides for the fusion of data to minimise network traffic and conserve energy resources of resource-constrained sensors. The second layer of processing is done at the base station of the network, where more computational resources are available for rigorous data analysis. Fusion of sensory data such as stress fields of a bridge or a logistical entity at the base station, provides a means to form holistic patterns over domains which would otherwise be impossible to observe from an individual sensor perspective.
